The Discovery Channel will feature Tao Berman running the 100 foot Cascada el Meco on February 26.  The promo calls it El Salto (which is the falls at the put-in of this section) but it really is the falls at the end of the run near the village of El Meco.  They state it is near Cuidad Villas (sic), Mexico.  Ciudad Valles is over an hour away and the nearest big city is Ciudad Mante.  Tao Berman previously ran this waterfall in 1998.  In fact he ran it twice, the second run he ended up backwards.  He returned late last year to film this for the Discovery Channel.  Currently, the promo can be found at http://dsc.discovery.com/fansites/stuntjunkies/episode/episode.html.

This was filmed in September, and one of the local kids there joined them on their run of the Micos at high water.  Jaistemay nearly drowned from his father's account in one of the smaller drops because the hydraulic was a keeper!  Did they show that on the program?

Well there is a lot of incorrect info in this post and I would like to set it straight. My  company http://www.aguaazul.com produced this segment for the stunt junkies.

First, it was filmed in Dec. 2006. So whatever happened in September had nothing to do with Stunt Junkies. No one was allowed to kayak with Tao other than his own safety crew. Not even my own crew of local guides -- unless they were driving a motorboat with a cameraman in the prow.

Second the river was at a medium flow. Medium by kayaking standards. Not high at all. I actually pulled in a favor with the engineer at the hydro plant at El Salto and got a bump of extra water for running el Meco.

No one from the crew ran Micos as a part of the show or the production. So no, it was not shown on the program, since it didn't happen. A rare thing for Hollywood. It is usually the opposite. Since Jaistemay lives in Valles and is a local kayaker, his misfortunes can hardly be blamed on anyone but himself and his father. Of course if he swam in Sept. and thought it was in Dec. and thought he was with Tao Berman, perhaps it was more traumatic than I'm giving credit.

Next, as the crow flies, yes, Mante is closer. However, we are not crows. It is further in drive time and probably miles to Mante than Valles. It involves going over two passes and a lot of curves on bad road. It is straight and level all the way to Valles. Also Mante in not a "big" city. It is a small mill town with limited services.
In the show they call the falls El Meco and the River El Salto. Both are correct.

Wow!  That is funny. . . I wish that I could have seen the show.  It sounds like you did a great job of showcasing the area.  It never ceases to amaze me what comes up from talking with people who do not have very much experience.  Thank you for using your experience to expand our paddling world safely.

I recently looked up the video and to see it, go to:

http://dsc.discovery.com/videos/stunt-junkies-kayaking-el-salto-falls.html

You have to go through an ad, and the video continually switches from camera to camera, so it is difficult to see the overall view of the falls and Tao's run.
