Well there is a lot of incorrect info in this post and I would like to set it straight. My company
http://www.aguaazul.com produced this segment for the stunt junkies.
First, it was filmed in Dec. 2006. So whatever happened in September had nothing to do with Stunt Junkies. No one was allowed to kayak with Tao other than his own safety crew. Not even my own crew of local guides -- unless they were driving a motorboat with a cameraman in the prow.
Second the river was at a medium flow. Medium by kayaking standards. Not high at all. I actually pulled in a favor with the engineer at the hydro plant at El Salto and got a bump of extra water for running el Meco.
No one from the crew ran Micos as a part of the show or the production. So no, it was not shown on the program, since it didn't happen. A rare thing for Hollywood. It is usually the opposite. Since Jaistemay lives in Valles and is a local kayaker, his misfortunes can hardly be blamed on anyone but himself and his father. Of course if he swam in Sept. and thought it was in Dec. and thought he was with Tao Berman, perhaps it was more traumatic than I'm giving credit.
Next, as the crow flies, yes, Mante is closer. However, we are not crows. It is further in drive time and probably miles to Mante than Valles. It involves going over two passes and a lot of curves on bad road. It is straight and level all the way to Valles. Also Mante in not a "big" city. It is a small mill town with limited services.
In the show they call the falls El Meco and the River El Salto. Both are correct.
