in A Gringo's Guide to Mexican Whitewater, 2nd Edition, the Guayalejo was described as class III.  In October 2000, as the book was being printed, there was a flood on the Guayalejo that completely changed the riverbed in some places.  As a result, the Guayalejo is a more difficult run and closer to class IV.  This makes the whitewater much more interesting for those that are willing to consider a multi-day river.
